Inputs

What you can change

Every field visitors can adjust, straight from the calculator, with the same help text they see on the info icon. Each one starts with a sensible default, and the 6 results update as they type.

Your Trip

Prepaid Non-Refundable Trip Cost
Flights, tours, cruise fare and hotel deposits you would lose if you cancelled, for all travelers.
Number of Travelers
Everyone on the trip being insured.

Your Quote

Quoted Rate (% of trip cost)
The quoted premium as a percentage of the insured trip cost. Divide the quote by the trip cost if it is shown in dollars. The default is only a placeholder.
Rate with Cancel For Any Reason (% of trip cost)
The total quoted rate for the same plan with the Cancel For Any Reason upgrade. Leave at 0 if you are not considering it.
Cancel For Any Reason Reimbursement (%)
The share of the trip cost the CFAR benefit repays, from the policy — commonly 50% or 75%.

Definitions

Travel Insurance Cost terms, defined

The terms this calculator uses, in plain words. The same definitions appear inside the calculator for your visitors.

Trip cancellation coverage
Repays prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for a reason the policy covers, such as illness or injury of a traveler or family member, a death, severe weather or a carrier strike. Changing your mind or work conflicts are usually not covered.
Insured trip cost
The amount you insure — the non-refundable portion of what you have prepaid. Premiums are commonly quoted as a percentage of it, so insuring only what you would actually lose keeps the cost down. Add later payments to the policy as you make them.
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR)
An optional upgrade that repays part of your trip cost, commonly 50% or 75%, if you cancel for a reason the base policy does not cover. It usually must be bought within a short window after your first trip payment and requires cancelling at least two days before departure.
Trip interruption
Pays unused prepaid costs and extra travel expenses if a covered reason forces you to cut a trip short or join it late. Many plans pay up to 150% of the trip cost for interruption.
Travel medical and evacuation
Covers emergency medical care and transport to a suitable hospital or home while traveling. Most U.S. health plans and Original Medicare offer little or no coverage abroad, and an air evacuation can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Pre-existing condition waiver
Many plans exclude cancellations caused by a pre-existing medical condition unless the plan is bought within a short time of the first trip payment and the full trip cost is insured. Check the look-back period in the policy.
