Inputs

What you can change

Every field visitors can adjust, straight from the calculator, with the same help text they see on the info icon. Each one starts with a sensible default, and the 6 results update as they type.

Your Quote

Monthly Premium
The monthly price from your pet insurance quote. The default is only a placeholder.
Annual Deductible
What you pay each year before the policy starts reimbursing.
Reimbursement (%)
The share of covered bills the policy pays after the deductible — often 70%, 80% or 90%.
Annual Benefit Limit (0 = unlimited)
The most the policy pays in a year. Enter 0 for an unlimited policy.

Vet Costs

Expected Yearly Vet Bills (accident & illness)
What you expect to spend in a typical year on covered accident and illness care. Leave out routine vaccines and checkups unless your policy covers them.
Big-Claim Scenario
A large bill to test, such as emergency surgery, a cancer treatment or a foreign-object removal.

Definitions

Pet Insurance Value terms, defined

The terms this calculator uses, in plain words. The same definitions appear inside the calculator for your visitors.

Pet insurance
A policy that reimburses part of your veterinary bills for covered accidents and illnesses. You usually pay the vet first and submit a claim. Accident-only plans cost less; accident-and-illness plans are the most common; wellness add-ons cover routine care.
Expected yearly value
What you would spend without insurance minus what you would spend with it (premiums plus your share of bills) in a typical year. In most years it is negative — you pay more in premiums than you get back — which is normal for insurance; the value shows up in the big-claim year.
Break-even vet bills
The yearly vet spending at which the policy pays back exactly what it costs: the deductible plus the annual premium divided by the reimbursement rate. With a $540 premium, $250 deductible and 80% reimbursement, that is $925 a year.
Reimbursement rate
The share of covered costs the insurer pays after the deductible. A higher rate means a higher premium but less out of pocket on a big bill.
Annual limit
The most the policy pays in a policy year. Unlimited plans cost more; low limits can leave you paying a large share of a major surgery or cancer treatment.
Pre-existing conditions and waiting periods
Most pet policies do not cover conditions that showed signs before coverage began, and they have waiting periods — commonly a few days for accidents and two weeks or more for illnesses, sometimes longer for orthopedic problems. Insuring a pet while young and healthy avoids most exclusions.
Self-insuring with savings
Putting the premium into a savings account instead. It can work if you can afford a sudden multi-thousand-dollar bill, but an emergency early on can exceed what you have saved.
