Inputs

What you can change

Every field visitors can adjust, straight from the calculator, with the same help text they see on the info icon. Each one starts with a sensible default, and the 6 results update as they type.

Expected Care

Expected Yearly Medical Costs
The total plan-allowed cost of the care you expect this year (visits, tests, prescriptions, procedures) before insurance pays. Try a low and a high figure to see how the answer changes.

Plan A

Monthly Premium (your share)
What you pay each month for Plan A after any employer contribution or premium tax credit.
Deductible
The amount you pay before Plan A starts sharing costs.
Coinsurance (%)
Your share of costs after the deductible, until you reach the out-of-pocket maximum.
Out-of-Pocket Maximum
The most you pay for covered in-network care in a year, including the deductible and coinsurance. Premiums do not count toward it.
Employer HSA/HRA Contribution
Money your employer puts in an HSA or HRA with Plan A each year. It offsets your costs.

Definitions

Health Plan Cost Comparison terms, defined

The terms this calculator uses, in plain words. The same definitions appear inside the calculator for your visitors.

Total yearly cost
Twelve months of premiums plus what you pay for care during the year, minus any employer HSA or HRA money. Comparing this figure, rather than premiums alone, shows the real price of each plan. A plan with a low premium can cost more overall if you use a lot of care.
Deductible
The amount of covered costs you pay each year before the plan starts paying its share. Many plans cover preventive care, and some cover office visits or drugs, before the deductible is met; this calculator assumes all costs count toward it.
Coinsurance
Your percentage of covered costs after the deductible. With 20% coinsurance on a $5,000 bill after the deductible, you pay $1,000 and the plan pays $4,000, until you reach the out-of-pocket maximum.
Out-of-pocket maximum
The cap on what you pay for covered in-network care in a plan year, counting deductibles, coinsurance and copays. After you reach it the plan pays 100% of covered care. Premiums and out-of-network care do not count toward it. Federal law sets the highest out-of-pocket maximum a plan may have each year.
Worst-case year
A year's premiums plus the full out-of-pocket maximum, minus employer HSA or HRA money. It is the most you would pay for covered in-network care in a bad year, and is useful when you are weighing a cheaper plan against your ability to handle a large bill.
Allowed amount
The price a plan has negotiated with in-network providers for a service, which is usually lower than the billed charge. Your deductible and coinsurance are based on the allowed amount, so use it when you estimate your yearly medical costs.
HSA and HRA
A health savings account (HSA) pairs with a high-deductible plan and lets you and your employer set aside tax-free money for medical costs; unused money stays yours. A health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) is employer-funded and its rules are set by the employer. Either one reduces your net cost.
Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC)
A standard document every health plan must provide, listing the deductible, coinsurance, copays and out-of-pocket maximum, with coverage examples. It is the best place to find the figures to enter here.
