Definitions

Critical Illness Insurance terms, defined

The terms this calculator uses, in plain words. The same definitions appear inside the calculator for your visitors.

Critical illness insurance
A policy that pays a tax-free lump sum when you are diagnosed with a covered condition, commonly cancer, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure or a major organ transplant. You can spend the money on anything: medical bills, the mortgage, travel to treatment or replacing lost pay. Each policy defines which conditions and how severe they must be.
Lost income not replaced
Take-home pay for the months off work, minus the share that disability insurance, sick leave or other benefits would pay. $5,000 a month for 6 months with 60% replaced leaves a $12,000 gap. Short-term disability often has a waiting period, so the first weeks may be unpaid.
Medical out-of-pocket costs
Deductibles, coinsurance and copays you pay even with health insurance, up to the plan's out-of-pocket maximum each year, plus non-covered or out-of-network care. Treatment that crosses into a new plan year can mean paying the maximum twice.
Extra costs of an illness
Costs health insurance does not pay: gas, parking and lodging for treatment, childcare, meals, home help and modifications such as ramps or a stair lift. They often add up to hundreds of dollars a month during treatment.
Survival period
Many policies require you to live a set number of days, often 14 to 30, after diagnosis before the benefit is paid. Some also have a waiting period after the policy starts during which a diagnosis is not covered.
Lump-sum benefit
The policy pays its face amount at once rather than reimbursing bills. Some policies pay a partial benefit for less severe conditions, such as early-stage cancer, and may allow a second claim for a different condition.
Critical illness vs. disability insurance
Disability insurance replaces part of your income for as long as you cannot work, for almost any illness or injury. Critical illness insurance pays one lump sum for specific diagnoses whether or not you stop working. Many people use critical illness cover to fill the gaps disability and health insurance leave.
