Inputs

What you can change

Every field visitors can adjust, straight from the calculator, with the same help text they see on the info icon. Each one starts with a sensible default, and the 6 results update as they type.

Your Quotes

Death Benefit
The coverage amount both quotes are for. Use the same amount for both so the comparison is fair.
Term Life Annual Premium
The yearly premium from your term life quote. The default is only a placeholder — enter your own quote.
Whole Life Annual Premium
The yearly premium from your whole life quote for the same death benefit. The default is only a placeholder.
Whole Life Cash Value at End of Term
The cash surrender value shown in the whole life illustration for the year the term policy would end. Use the guaranteed column for a conservative comparison.

Comparison Assumptions

Term Length (years)
How many years the term policy lasts — the period this comparison covers.
Return on Invested Difference (%)
The yearly return you expect on the money you save by choosing term, after fees. Returns are not guaranteed.

Definitions

Term vs. Whole Life Insurance terms, defined

The terms this calculator uses, in plain words. The same definitions appear inside the calculator for your visitors.

Term life insurance
Coverage for a fixed period, such as 10, 20 or 30 years. It pays the death benefit only if the insured dies during the term and builds no cash value, which is why it usually costs far less per dollar of coverage than permanent insurance. Many policies can be renewed or converted at the end of the term, usually at a much higher price.
Whole life insurance
Permanent coverage that lasts for life as long as premiums are paid. Part of each premium builds a cash value that grows at a guaranteed rate, and participating policies may also pay dividends. Premiums are level but much higher than term premiums for the same death benefit.
Buy term and invest the difference
A strategy of buying cheaper term coverage and investing the premium you save. This calculator grows that yearly difference at the return you enter, invested at the start of each year, and compares the result with the whole life cash value at the end of the term. It only works if the difference is actually invested every year.
Cash surrender value
The amount you would receive if you cancelled a whole life policy, after any surrender charges. It is usually low in the early years and grows over time. Policy illustrations show a guaranteed column and a non-guaranteed column that assumes current dividends continue.
Policy illustration
The year-by-year projection an insurer provides with a permanent life quote, showing premiums, cash values and death benefits. Use the value for the year your term policy would end. Guaranteed figures are contractual; non-guaranteed figures can change.
Rate of return
The yearly growth you assume on the invested difference. Investments can lose value, and taxes and fees reduce returns, so try a lower rate to see how sensitive the result is. Whole life cash value grows tax-deferred, which this simple comparison does not adjust for.
Advantage of term plus investing
The invested difference at the end of the term minus the whole life cash value at the same point. A positive figure means term plus investing came out ahead under your assumptions; a negative figure means the whole life cash value was larger. Either way, the term policy has no coverage left after the term, while whole life continues.
