Definitions

Final Expense Insurance terms, defined

The terms this calculator uses, in plain words. The same definitions appear inside the calculator for your visitors.

Final expense insurance
A small whole life policy, often $5,000 to $50,000, meant to pay funeral costs and final bills. It is usually easier to qualify for than larger policies, with simplified health questions or none at all, and premiums stay level for life. Because underwriting is lighter, the cost per dollar of coverage is higher.
Graded death benefit
A feature of some guaranteed-issue policies: if the insured dies of natural causes during the first two or three years, the policy refunds premiums plus interest or pays only part of the face amount. Accidental deaths are usually paid in full from the start. Check the waiting period before relying on the policy.
General price list
Under the FTC Funeral Rule, funeral homes must give you an itemized price list when you ask in person, and give prices by phone. It is the best source for the funeral costs you enter here, and it lets you choose only the goods and services you want.
Burial vs. cremation
Burial usually adds a casket, cemetery plot, grave opening and closing, a vault and a headstone, so it typically costs more than cremation. Cremation can still include a service, an urn and a niche or scattering. Enter the costs for the option you prefer.
Projected future cost
Today's total grown by the inflation rate for the years until needed. $19,500 today at 3% for 15 years is about $30,400. Because final expense policies usually have a level face amount, planning for the future cost avoids being underinsured later.
Prepaid funeral plan
An arrangement with a funeral home to pay in advance for chosen services, funded by a trust or an insurance policy. It locks in some prices but may not be portable if you move. Count what it covers as savings set aside so it is not double counted.
Beneficiary
The person who receives the payout and is expected to pay the bills. Naming a trusted family member, rather than your estate, usually gets the money to them within days or weeks instead of waiting for probate.
