Definitions

Insurance Deductible Break-Even terms, defined

The terms this calculator uses, in plain words. The same definitions appear inside the calculator for your visitors.

Deductible
The part of a covered loss you pay before the insurer pays the rest. On auto and home policies it applies to each claim. A higher deductible shifts small losses to you, so the insurer charges a lower premium.
Break-even point
The number of claim-free years it takes for the premium savings to equal the extra deductible you would pay on one claim. With $500 more deductible and $150 a year in savings, you break even after about 3.3 years without a claim.
Expected yearly advantage
The premium you save each year minus the extra deductible spread over your average years between claims. A positive number means the higher deductible should cost less over time if your claims history holds; a negative one favors the lower deductible.
Claim frequency
How often you file claims. Many households go years between claims, which tends to favor higher deductibles. If you have had several recent claims, the lower deductible may make more sense.
Self-insuring small losses
Paying minor damage yourself instead of filing a claim. It avoids possible premium increases and keeps your claims record clean, and it works best when you choose a deductible you can comfortably pay from an emergency fund.
Percentage deductibles
Some home policies use a deductible that is a percentage of the dwelling limit for wind, hurricane or earthquake losses — 2% of $400,000 is $8,000. Enter those as dollar amounts here to compare them.
